Author Guidelines

Neuroscience Perspectives publishes high-quality empirical, theoretical, and review articles that advance understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying behavior, cognition, and mental processes.

Only manuscripts that have at least 80% originality after checking through the anti-plagiarism system are sent for further review.

2. Article Types

2.1 Original Research Articles

Full-length reports of empirical research.

  • Maximum length: 8,000 words (excluding references)
  • Structure: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion
  • Must present clearly defined hypotheses and rigorous methodology

2.2 Review Articles

Comprehensive syntheses of the literature.

  • Maximum length: 10,000 words
  • Systematic reviews must include a transparent search and selection strategy
  • Narrative reviews must provide critical and integrative analysis

2.3 Perspectives / Hypothesis Articles

Theory-driven contributions proposing new models or interpretations.

  • Maximum length: 5,000 words
  • Emphasis on conceptual innovation and argumentative clarity

2.4 Short Reports

Brief reports of novel findings of high significance.

  • Maximum length: 3,000 words
  • Up to 3 figures/tables

3. Manuscript Structure

3.1 Title Page

  • The first line is the MRNTI number (or, in exceptional cases, the UDC), left-aligned, bold. The MRNTI number can be found on the website http://grnti.ru/ 
  • Titile (≤20 words)
  • Full author names and affiliations
  • Corresponding author (email)
  • 4–6 keywords

3.2 Abstract

  • Maximum 250 words
  • Structured format:
    • Background
    • Methods
    • Results
    • Conclusions

 3.3 Main Text

Introduction

  • Clear rationale and theoretical background
  • Explicit statement of hypotheses or research questions

 Methods

  • Sufficient detail to ensure reproducibility
  • Must include:
    • sample characteristics (size, inclusion/exclusion criteria)
    • experimental procedures
    • statistical analysis
  • Preregistration details should be provided where applicable

Results

  • Objective presentation of findings
  • No interpretative statements
  • Must report:
    • effect sizes
    • confidence intervals

Discussion

  • Interpretation in relation to hypotheses and existing literature
  • Explicit discussion of limitations
  • Implications and future directions

4. Statistical and Methodological Standards

The journal adheres to high standards of methodological transparency and statistical rigor.

Authors must:

  • justify sample size (power analysis where applicable)
  • report all statistical tests performed
  • provide effect sizes and confidence intervals

Where appropriate, authors are encouraged to complement frequentist analyses with Bayesian approaches.

5. Section-Specific Reporting Requirements

In addition to the general reporting standards, authors must comply with the requirements specific to their methodological and disciplinary domain. Manuscripts that do not meet these standards may be returned prior to peer review.

Electrophysiology

Authors must report all experimental parameters in sufficient detail to ensure reproducibility, including:

  • composition of intra- and extracellular solutions
  • electrode resistance
  • series resistance and compensation procedures
  • capacitance compensation settings (for patch-clamp recordings)

Criteria for data inclusion/exclusion and recording stability must be clearly specified.

Neuroimaging (EEG/MRI)

A complete description of data acquisition and analysis is required, including:

  • acquisition parameters (e.g., TR, TE, voxel size, sampling rate)
  • preprocessing procedures (e.g., filtering, artifact correction, normalization)
  • statistical modeling and inference methods

The use of established open-source toolboxes, such as MNE, EEGLAB, or SPM, is encouraged.

Authors must clearly distinguish between exploratory and confirmatory analyses and avoid circular analysis.

Molecular Neuroscience

Authors must provide:

  • detailed characterization of experimental models (e.g., cell lines, animal strains, genetic modifications)
  • source and validation of key reagents (e.g., antibodies)
  • clear reporting of biological and technical replicates
  • independent validation of principal findings where applicable

Potential batch effects and methods used to control them must be reported.

Clinical Neuroscience

Submissions must include:

  • diagnostic criteria and recruitment procedures
  • detailed participant characteristics (e.g., age, sex, clinical status, medication use)
  • inclusion and exclusion criteria

Authors must distinguish between statistical significance and clinical relevance.
For interventional studies, trial registration and adherence to appropriate reporting guidelines are required.

Cognitive Neuroscience

Authors must report:

  • complete description of experimental tasks and stimuli
  • timing parameters and trial structure
  • procedures for randomization and counterbalancing

Behavioral results must include accuracy and response time measures, along with data exclusion criteria.

Interpretations must clearly distinguish between cognitive constructs and neural inferences. Reverse inference must be justified.

Computational Neuroscience

Authors must provide:

  • full specification of models (including equations, parameters, and assumptions)
  • access to code and documentation sufficient for reproducibility
  • description of training, validation, and testing procedures

Models must be interpretable and explicitly linked to neurobiological or cognitive processes.
Submissions that are purely engineering-oriented without clear relevance to neuroscience will not be considered.

Note: Compliance with section-specific reporting standards is a prerequisite for peer review.

5. Open Science and Reproducibility

Neuroscience Perspectives strongly supports open science practices.

Authors are encouraged to:

  • preregister studies
  • submit replication studies
  • provide open access to data (e.g., OSF, Zenodo)
  • share analysis code

6. Ethics

6.1 Human Research

  • Approval by an institutional ethics committee (or equivalent)
  • Informed consent must be obtained

 6.2 Animal Research

  • Compliance with international standards (e.g., ARRIVE guidelines)

 6.3 Competing Interests

  • All authors must disclose potential conflicts of interest

 7. Style and Formatting

  • Language: English (consistent use of either British or American spelling)
  • Style: clear, concise, and precise
  • References: APA (7th edition) 

 8. Figures and Tables

  • Minimum resolution: 300 dpi
  • Captions must be self-contained
  • Figures should be accessible (colorblind-friendly palettes recommended)

 9. Peer Review

All submissions undergo double-blind peer review.

  • At least two independent reviewers
  • Evaluation criteria:
    • originality
    • methodological rigor
    • theoretical contribution
    • reproducibility

 10. Transparency and Reporting

All submissions must include:

  • Data Availability Statement
  • Funding Statement
  • Author Contributions (CRediT taxonomy)

 11. Editorial Screening and Rejection Criteria

Manuscripts may be rejected without external review if they:

  • lack clear novelty or contribution
  • do not meet methodological standards
  • contain insufficient statistical rigor
  • are primarily descriptive without theoretical advancement

Molecular and Clinical Neuroscience

Authors must provide:

  • detailed characterization of experimental models (e.g., cell lines, animal strains, genetic modifications);
  • source, catalog numbers, and validation information for key reagents and antibodies;
  • clear reporting of biological and technical replicates;
  • detailed statistical analysis procedures;
  • independent validation of principal findings where applicable.

Potential batch effects and methods used to control or mitigate them must be explicitly reported.

Studies involving animal or human material must include appropriate ethical approval statements.

Clinical Neuroscience

Submissions involving clinical populations must include:

  • diagnostic criteria and participant recruitment procedures;
  • detailed participant characteristics (e.g., age, sex, clinical status, medication use);
  • inclusion and exclusion criteria;
  • information regarding informed consent and ethics approval.

Authors should clearly distinguish between statistical significance and clinical relevance.

For interventional or prospective clinical studies, trial registration and adherence to appropriate reporting guidelines (e.g., CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA where applicable) are required.

Computational Neuroscience

Authors must provide:

  • full specification of computational models, including equations, parameters, assumptions, and implementation details;
  • access to code, scripts, and documentation sufficient to ensure reproducibility;
  • clear description of training, validation, and testing procedures where applicable;
  • appropriate statistical evaluation and performance metrics.

Models should be interpretable and explicitly linked to neurobiological, cognitive, or behavioral processes.

Submissions that are primarily engineering-oriented without clear relevance to neuroscience will not be considered for review.
